Folklore & Costumes

Peqin has a variety of authentic folk costumes, which are a testament to the rich early traditions of the region. Ethnographic sources, archeological excavations, and costume data of this area, confirm their antiquity. The black jacket (with and without wings) which are commonly seen in central Albania, are also worn in Peqin. The jacquard dress is typical as a traditional costume for men in the city.

In Peqin, the popular civic songs and dances are performed with great passion, and at the same time the traditional folk costumes are preserved with great pride.

The loom is also traditionally used by women in the Peqin area, who weave fabrics, carpets, tapestries, etc. Embroidery and crochet is a difficult yet beautiful craft which also servces as a source of income for Peqin residents. This craft is very varied, including pieces with padding, cross, crochet and spear, to create both traditional Albanian pieces as well as more modern designs. The duration of the craft project depends on the model and type of work. But, despite the fact that these works of art are beautiful, special and unique, in Albania they have not received the proper appreciation and it is difficult to integrate in today's market, where many handmade works of art compete with mass-manufactured items of lesser quality and artistic integrity.
