Farming & Agriculture

Agriculture is an important sector of Peqin’s economy. The majority of rural family economies are in farming and agriculture.

This is mainly due to the geographical position and the suitable climate to grow many crops.

Producers are stewards of land and livestock, responsibly producing healthy, safe and affordable food.

Shkumbin river, meandering through the region and the undulating low hills, has favoured for centuries the cultivation of olive trees, vineyard and fruticulture.

Based on geographical characteristics, Peqin key agricultural land is mainly concentrated south of the Shkumbin river where high capability soils predominate. Fields along Shkumbin  river are genuine working landscapes where normal farm practices are promoted and protected.

North side of Shkumbin river also has some areas of prime agricultural land however is mainly dominated by low and high range of hills.

Recently farmers in Peqin are under pressure to produce more food for their family need but also to grow their business.

They must do this while caring for the livestock, land and water on their farms. Some areas, in which farmers face challenges, include crop protection, soil conservation, labour, climate change and health.

The last few years there is growing number of peach, apricot plantations mostly in Gjocaj and Sheze administrative units.

Crop farmers of Peqin district use soil conservation methods to protect their lands.

Future of agriculture is one of the most critical problems of the next generation and for that reason local agricultural board of specialists ought to hold some of the keys to its solution.

Farmers in Peqin should be oriented toward advanced technologies that aim regenerative Agriculture, an approach to food and farming systems that regenerates topsoil and increases biodiversity.

The cattle is maily grass -fed however the dairy farming is still behind in Peqin and requires modern tools. The introduction of smart technology on the farm, will boost the future of Peqin region dairy farming.

Peqin farmers should open the farm gates to visitors and tourists and shift some of the focus of their operation from production to people. This strategy requires innovation, business planning and proper marketing. Farm owners who have successfully integrated agri-tourism into their operations, have seen the benefits of this transition. This innovative approach has enhanced their lifestyle as well as their business.

The development of Agri-tourism in Peqin district endorses a growing desire by consumers to head outdoors and to the country for more leisure opportunities. Agro-tourism generates additional incomes, creates additional job opportunities, improves living and working conditions on the farm, develops skills in managing, entrepreneurship and communications, spreads awareness about local agriculture venues and products, increases farm resilience and prosperity, generates off-season revenues.

Visits to rural environments contribute to participate in activities, events or attractions that are not available in urbanized areas.

IT’S TIME FOR PEQIN AGRICULTURE TO MEET FUTURE EXPECTATIONS AND APPLY GROUNDBREAKING SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM.
