The primary purpose of the Environmental Protection in Peqin district is to contribute to a sustainable development through pollution prevention by the implementation of environmental protection programs, monitoring and collecting data on the quality and state of the environment.

Climate change is highly complex and global in nature.

Interaction between the land and atmosphere to further our understanding of how the entire Earth system is changing.

Environmental protection has always been applied by humans in one form or another. However, the need for methodical environmental protection has increased.

Due to the failings of the past and greater perception of the intricacy of environmental problems, there is a growing acknowledgment that environmental protection is best achieved through the use of a multidimensional approach.

This entails the use of a combination of monitoring, economic, voluntary, and information mechanisms, where the strategy is determined on the basis of the available and sustainable evidence.

The degree of inerts exploitation of the Shkumbin riverbed is generally high.

In the Shkumbin basin, a number of processing plants that use river aggregates have been set up and operate for decades.

We underline the fact that the vast majority of exploiting entities receive the material implementing the exploitation projects as licensed, however more rigorous measure should be in place, especially for the rehabilitation of the environment after exploitation.

An institutional coordination is required to exercise a specialized control and penalize the entities that do not comply with license provisions regarding the preservation of the environment and the natural ecosystem in Peqin.

Central and local governmental authority should monitor the use of “Shkumbin” river aggregates to prevent the following consequences:

  • damages of irrigation works (as a result of lowering of river levels)

  • damages of engineering and protective works (bridges, retaining walls, embankments, etc)

  • reduction of the groundwater level and reduction of water supply to the surrounding villages.

  • damage to vegetation and ecosystem

  • erosion of riverbanks leading to the soil loss and landscape degradation,

  • modification of geomorphologic earth structure

  • significant reduction in arable land

  • significant decrease in the agricultural production

All parties in the process should come together with a well-thought plan and deploy their efforts to eliminate the influence of human factors on the riverbank’s degradation in the “Shkumbin” valley.

Also, more investments should be made by the government in the protection and systematization of water basins, mainly in the mountainous areas of Peqin district, which are not only essential resources for irrigation in these areas, but also as important environmental factors for ecosystem conservation.

Water basins can serve as a reference point to turn the environment around them into attractive tourist values and increase the economic income of communities.

Planting trees all along “Shkumbin” riverbanks, whenever feasible, not only contribute to the prevention of erosion but also as a major factor of air purification

The creation of green corridors in sync with the beauty of the river "Shkumbin" as well as the crowns of rounded hills, filled with olives, citrus, viticulture, and orchards, turns this area into a natural pearl.

Let each of us give his contribution in the protection of our natyral treasure, for today and the generations to come.
